Because of toys! – Xiaomi SU7: Handy-Auto surprises at first contact

Cell phone manufacturer Xiaomi has hit the jackpot with its electric car: customers are literally tearing the car out of the hands of the Chinese electronics giant. The SU7 is making a huge appearance at the Beijing auto show and is already in the showrooms – alongside washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. We had the opportunity to at least test sit in Beijing. Getting a test drive is more than difficult given the current rush.

Over 75,000 units were ordered in the first four weeks and the car has already been sold out for weeks. 5,781 vehicles were delivered to customers during this time, and by the end of the year there should be 100,000 units, more than was initially targeted. Appearance in the showroomThe impression at first contact: surprisingly solid, frighteningly good from a European perspective. The Xiaomi SU7 looks even better in person than in photos and is also really well made. The design is neither uniform nor a copy of any western sedan, but rather independent, well-proportioned and even somehow emotional. The drag coefficient is 0.195. The only thing missing is a brand story, which you would like to find here and there. But Xiaomi doesn’t have anything like that. You’re most likely reminded of a Porsche Taycan. The SU7 would also make a splendid successor to the Kia Stinger. Only the dent on the roof of the top model, the radar or. Lidar eye, quite irritating. Completely in contrast to the interior. It is very tidy and is dominated by a 16-inch touchscreen in the middle. The small speedometer screen rotates when you start the system – a nice gimmick. There are practically no buttons – except for the steering wheel, which even has two extra sporty buttons. This is also a homage to Porsche. What can be operated and touched feels good. The materials look elegant, artificial leather everywhere, and seams ensure sporty elegance. The door panels flow smoothly into the dashboard. A floating center console offers space for two cell phones and two cups, and you can easily fit a handbag underneath. There is enough space, even in the back seats. No wonder with a length of almost five meters and a wheelbase of three meters. However, you miss the so-called foot garage of the Porsche Taycan here: the floor is simply too high, you have to bend your legs a lot. There is a 100-liter frunk under the front hood, and the trunk also swallows 517 liters, including the compartment under the floor. Drive at Porsche level We weren’t able to try out the drives. There would be several options. The base model has 400 volts, a 299 hp rear-wheel drive and runs 210 km/h. The top model works with 800 volts, has two engines with a total of 673 hp and all-wheel drive, the top speed is 265 km/h. 2.8 seconds should be enough to sprint to 100 km/h. It only takes 10 minutes to recharge with a range of 390 kilometers. Total range: over 800 kilometers according to Chinese standards. Prices between just under 28,000 and almost 40,000 euros. We’re hoping for a test drive soon – and that the price premium won’t be too steep when the Xiaomi finds its way to the West. And of course, the Xiaomi SU7 still has to prove that it drives at least nearly as well as it looks.
