Surely you have already seen the Boston Dynamics robot dog that inspired the screenwriters of black-mirror in an episode of the series. After doing somersaults and danced like the Rolling Stonesit will now have a concrete use.

Named Spot, the little yellow robot was deployed in Pompeii to protect the archaeological site.

A robot dog to patrol Pompeii

His mission: watch over the ancient city day and night to fight against theft and looting. More concretely, this new guardian will inspect every corner of the city destroyed almost 2000 years ago by the eruption of Vesuvius and collect useful data for the study and planning of interventions. He will also patrol at night to secure the area, knowing that he is able to criss-cross the hard-to-reach underground galleries used by antiquity looters.

This four-legged robot is indeed particularly agile, even on rough terrain. Thanks to its multitude of sensors, it can identify and avoid obstacles autonomously. As the device is still in the experimental phase, it will be supported by the Leica BLK2FLY drone, capable of scanning the ruins in 3D by forming point clouds. The Spot test is part of the Smart@POMPEI project. launched in 2016 which plans to use new technologies to preserve the site.
