LaLiga has filed a complaint against Paris Saint-Germain with the European Commission for receiving foreign subsidies that distort the European Union (EU) internal market, the Spanish football league announced on Saturday.

LaLiga “has lodged a complaint with the European Commission to denounce the fact that the financing mechanisms of PSG generate a serious distortion of the internal market of the EU”, indicated the body chaired by Javier Tebas in a press release.

This action is based on a new foreign subsidy regulation, which came into force last July, which targets ‘foreign subsidies that distort the internal market’, according to LaLiga’s statement.

A letter sent to the commission

The Spanish league sent a letter to the Commission on the grounds that “PSG has received foreign subsidies from the State of Qatar, which have allowed it to improve its competitive position and generate significant distortions in several national markets and of the EU”.

According to her, PSG thus obtains resources “under non-market conditions which distort various intertwined markets”, which allows it to recruit players and coaches “far beyond its possibilities in a normal market scenario”.

“Unfair competition” from PSG

In addition, he would also have “income from sports sponsorship for amounts that do not correspond to market values”. The body concludes by expressing its confidence that the Commission “will take the necessary measures to eliminate market distortions such as those described, which seriously harm the sports ecosystem”.

At the head of LaLiga since 2013, Javier Tebas, continues to denounce a supposed “unfair competition” of PSG vis-à-vis its European neighbors. This complaint is in addition to other procedures carried out in the same direction, such as last year when the Spanish league denounced PSG and Manchester City to UEFA for having “infringed the rules of financial fair play”.
