Immediately before going to the polls, Russia is expanding its list of sanctions against US citizens. Because of an “anti-Russian course,” the country is refusing entry to more than 200 other people. Numerous historians, political scientists and journalists appear on the list.

A day before the start of the presidential election, the Russian Foreign Ministry under Sergei Lavrov imposed entry bans on more than 200 US citizens because of allegations of “anti-Russian activities”. The ministry in Moscow said on its website that “227 Americans involved in the development, implementation and justification of the anti-Russian course of the current US administration” would be barred from entering Russia.

In addition to the spokesman for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, numerous professors of history and political science are on the list. A number of journalists, including from the Washington Post and the New York Times, as well as the founder of a project reporting on organized crime and corruption were also added to the list.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also warned against “attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation” during the weekend’s presidential election. Given the lack of approval of opposition candidates, Vladimir Putin’s re-election is considered very likely.

Since the invasion of Ukraine began, many Western states and communities have sanctioned numerous companies and individuals. Moscow has responded with its own sanctions and has so far banned more than 2,000 US citizens from entering the country.
