For its return to China, Wiko will bet on HarmonyOS

With subscribers absent from the French market in 2022, even though Canalys placed it in fifth place among smartphone sellers in France in 2021, Wiko is preparing to return to center stage. The brand of the Chinese giant Tinno announces the presentation, this December 27, of a new terminal, simply stamped Wiko 5G. If the latter has little chance of being marketed in our regions, it testifies to an interesting strategic reversal.

Because if we are to believe Huawei Central, it is not Android that will animate the Wiko 5G. The smartphone will indeed be equipped with HarmonyOS, Huawei’s operating system – reserved for smartphones in China, but available on the brand’s tablets in France -, to which the brand has devoted all its efforts since 2019, the year from which she was deprived of Google services. It should be remembered that the first rumors mentioned last year the possibility that Huawei would provide, under license, its operating system to third-party manufacturers.

The partnership between the two brands would not stop at the software, since the first visual shared by Wiko on its social networks shows a device similar to a terminal that we already know: the Nova 9 SE, which we tested last June. It shares the same appearance, but also a 108 megapixel main photo sensor, 66 W fast charging and 256 GB internal storage space. The Nova 9 SE, however, was equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip only compatible with the 4G networks, and its twin Wiko will logically adopt another chipset, which will give it compatibility with 5G. An appearance of the Wiko smartphone in the lists of TENAA, the Chinese telecom certification body, confirms the relationship of the device with the Nova 9 SE, but does not reveal the SoC: it is therefore on this characteristic , capable of upsetting the performance of the smartphone, which we will pay all our attention to.
