AMD is pulling out all the stops to deploy its RDNA 3 architecture in as many directions as possible: smartphones after PCs and consoles.

Thunderbolt at the start of 2023, Samsung is launching a major new smartphone with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but for the first time, it is not powered by an in-house processor.

Instead of the Exynos 2300 once planned, it is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from Qualcomm that we find at the heart of the beast. Samsung had some design difficulties… They seem partly to be over.

14.7x more powerful on AI tasks

In reality, the problem was deeper and as soon as the Galaxy S22 Ultra was released, voices were raised to evoke an Exynos 2200 processor that was out of step with the competition, not sufficiently valiant.

Samsung had taken note of this. Samsung had canceled the Exynos 2300 which was too close to its ancestor and Samsung had sourced it from the competition. The lesson has been learned and the first publications around the Exynos 2400 seem to be going in the right direction. Of course, let’s keep in mind that these publications are the sole work of Samsung.

However, the company is particularly confident by taking advantage of its System LSI Tech Day 2023 to discuss remarkable gains, particularly in the acceleration of tasks linked to artificial intelligence.

Xclipse 940 based on RDNA 3

In this very specific area – and above all very fashionable – Samsung announces 14.7x higher performance between the Exynos 2200 and the Exynos 2400. Almost surprisingly, Samsung also mentions CPU performance multiplied by 1.7 between the two chips.

Samsung is also very proud to highlight the fruits of joint work with AMD: the Exynos 2400 relies, for its graphics part, on AMD’s RDNA3 architecture. In fact, the Xclipse 940 – the GPU part of the Exynos 2400 – is largely focused on video games.

Unfortunately, Samsung did not even want to give us a taste of the performance to expect from such an association. Let’s just remember that the Xclipse 920 – graphics part of the Exynos 2200 – has six RDNA2 calculation units, but remained 30% slower than a Snapdragon Gen 1.

If the South Korean group has not gone into further detail, the Exynos 2400 has every chance of powering the Galaxy S24 and S24+ while the S24 Ultra would work with Qualcomm’s Snapdagon 8 Gen 3, because the Samsung’s return to the forefront cannot happen in one day.
