And the effort is having an effect: the existing tree protection ordinance has now been expanded at the municipal council meeting. In the future, private individuals – including housing cooperatives, for example – will have to report every tree they want to clear. “What has succeeded here is unique in Lower Austria,” emphasizes Green Club chairwoman Selina Prünster, who hopes that there will be many “copycat offenders” in other cities and towns as well.
