for what advantages and disadvantages?

Apple has announced the iPhone 15 Pro: two models which bring their share of new features. From the outside, they may appear similar, but to think that the design does not change would be a mistake: in fact, these smartphones have a titanium frame.

When announcing the iPhone 15, Apple presented a new feature that may seem minor for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Their frame has changed from stainless steel to titanium. From our point of view, there are three reasons behind the choice of this “more” material. noble “.

iPhone 15 Pros (a little) lighter

Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, which helps reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Which was almost a necessity: last year the iPhone 14 Pro Max offered a 6.7-inch screen and weighed 240 grams. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 6.8-inch screen and weighs 234 grams. The difference is not huge, but Apple wanted to reduce the mass of its most high-end models.

The result is there: 19 grams less for the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, compared to the previous generation. A slight difference (literally), but still significant. On the other hand, this brushed-look titanium offers greater durability and prevents fingerprints a little more a priori. This also makes them the lightest Pro models ever marketed by the brand. In fact, it’s the thinnest edge ever seen on an iPhone.

More robust and durable iPhone 15 Pros

This is not the first product from the brand to benefit from this material. Last year, Apple presented its first Apple Watch Ultra, describing titanium as a material “aerospace grade“. As with the iPhone, titanium gave the Watch Ultra a “perfect balance between weight, robustness and corrosion resistance», as Apple itself writes.

As we have seen, a large part of the marketing behind this watch revolved around its robustness. This is inevitably an advantage also on the iPhone 15 Pro. During the keynote, Apple described the iPhone 15 Pro as incredibly durable and robust thanks precisely to this titanium frame. Finally, still according to Apple, this would help with better heat dissipation.

iPhone 15 Pro yet (a little) cheaper

Titanium is a more expensive material than stainless steel, which could have partly explained the increase in the price of the iPhone 15 Pro. However, it is the opposite: the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are a little cheaper than their predecessors with between 100 and 150 euros of “reduction“. Remember that this is not the first smartphone with a titanium frame: the Essential Phone was already entitled to it in 2017. And the iPhone could well set the tone for future ultra-premium smartphone releases. Indeed, the rumors surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Xiaomi 14 Pro also mention the arrival of a titanium frame.
