Ford is developing a robot that can charge your electric vehicle without you having to leave it. A technological advance that could help drivers with reduced mobility.

In a video published on July 20, Ford presents its new robot-charger, designed for people with disabilities.

A robot that charges your electric vehicle

To use it, nothing could be simpler: all you have to do is move the vehicle forward in front of the smart charging station and take out your smartphone. From an application, you can activate the robot, which comes out of the station. A mechanical arm seems to detect the car’s charging socket, which opens by itself thanks to the application. The arm then connects autonomously, and begins to load the vehicle. The user can then wait inside or get out of the car.

Innovation is the product of the German University of Dortmund. According to Ford, electric vehicles are more popular than thermal vehicles among people with reduced mobility, because charging is easier to handle than the gas pump. Thus, the manufacturer is trying to take another step towards inclusiveness with this new robot. In the long term, the company wishes to develop means of loading which do not require any intervention on the part of the driver.

If it is not currently accessible to the general public, this robot augurs great progress to come on the side of charging stations.
