Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini dies at 65

(dpa) Former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini is dead. He died on Saturday at the age of 65, the Italian news agency Ansa reported late in the evening.

Frattini served twice as Foreign Minister under Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi – first from 2002 to 2004, then from 2008 to 2011. In between, the law graduate was EU Justice Commissioner from 2004 to 2008. Most recently, Frattini has been President of the Italian Council of State since 2022.

According to Italian media reports, the politician had been ill for a long time. He died at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
