Former Philippines President Fidel Ramos dies at 94

Former Philippine President Fidel Ramos, who led the country through a rare period of growth and peace, died on Sunday July 31 at the age of 94, senior officials in the country said. The frail-looking career soldier, colloquially nicknamed “Eddie” by Filipinos, was president from 1992 to 1998.

“It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of former President Fidel V. Ramos”announced Trixie Cruz-Angeles, the press secretary for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, son and namesake of the late dictator, who took office last month.

“He leaves behind a colorful legacy. (…) in history for his participation in the great changes of our country, both as a military officer and as chief executive”she added.

“Pillar of Democracy”

Fidel Ramos’ family is expected to issue a statement later on Sunday. The cause of death has not yet been released.

The European Union Delegation to the Philippines expressed its condolences, describing the deceased as a “devoted statesman” and one “pillar of democracy”. Fidel Ramos was the first Protestant to gain the supreme office in this predominantly Catholic country, despite the opposition of some members of the Church.
