Four detainees from the central house of Saint-Martin-de-Ré (Charente-Maritime) were injured on Tuesday, including one seriously, during a “succession of fights” which ended in “general fight” in the courtyard of promenade of the establishment, we learned on Wednesday from the La Rochelle prosecutor’s office.

Two detainees, “stung by a sharp object”, perhaps “a knife or a homemade pick”, were hospitalized in La Rochelle. One of them, hit in the abdomen, was evacuated in absolute urgency but his vital prognosis is not engaged, according to the prosecution. The other two injured were taken care of in the infirmary of the penitentiary establishment. One was hit in the head by a pétanque ball and the other received a blow to the head.

An investigation opened for “voluntary violence with weapons”

The sharp object was not found at the end of the fight, according to the prosecution, which opened an investigation for “voluntary violence with weapons” entrusted to the research brigade of La Rochelle and the gendarmerie of Saint- Martin-de-Re. The investigation should in particular seek to understand the reason for the brawls, which took place around 5:00 p.m. The detainees then refused to return to their cells but were all able to be reinstated around 9:00 p.m., according to the prosecution.
