The fourth wave has already arrived in Germany. The current figures show: The younger age groups in particular are severely affected by the coronavirus. We asked our followers via the Brigitte Instagram channel how they look towards autumn.

The highest seven-day incidence with 181.96 new infections within seven days is still in the age group of ten to 14 year olds, closely followed by the 15 to 19 year olds with a group incidence of 172.06. The values are almost twice as high as the average incidence in the whole of Germany, which is currently 82.7 (as of September 8, 2021).

The seven-day incidences are highest in the young ages

The Robert Koch Institute warned a week ago that the fourth wave would primarily affect the younger age groups. The virus is spreading rapidly in the young age groups due to the delta variant and currently only a few vaccinations.

In addition, the overall vaccination rate is too low to start the autumn calmly, warned the Berlin Charité virologist Christian Drosten. He criticizes the indifference in the population and reckons that we will need contact restrictions again in the near future to contain the pandemic.

Brigitte Instagram users talk about their concerns about the fourth wave

Experts try to assess the current situation on the basis of the facts and figures, make suggestions and turn to politicians with advice. But what is the mood like in the population? After a year and a half in lockdown ups and downs, the strength of many has been used up, the new wave is about to begin and there are renewed worries. But there are also many who try to look positively towards autumn.

We asked our followers of the Brigitte Instagram channel two questions. The first was: What worries do you have or what are you afraid of in the fourth wave? The answers are varied. Since it says among other things: “Longcovid in young people” or “an infection of children”.

Two big topics: The corona measures and ongoing quarantine

“Before the measures to contain the corona” and before the “illness of my children and before constant quarantine due to cases in the immediate vicinity”, it says in the answers. A user writes to us: “We are currently in quarantine. Son infected Delta from school and vaccinated father. ”The scenario that some families will face in the coming weeks. A vaccination does not protect 100 percent against the Delta variant.

Nevertheless, many trust the vaccinations and the knowledge that at least a severe course can be prevented. One user wrote: “None [Sorgen], because our daughter is vaccinated. ”Another follower seems to have little fear of the virus, but rather of“ getting old … ”.

The start of school with face-to-face lessons is received in two ways

When asked how the users view the start of school with face-to-face teaching, the answers are also very different. “Normal. Children usually have a good immune system, ”someone writes. “A conflict: joy for the child and at the same time worries about what can happen,” writes someone else.

“That the children are left alone to catch up on school material” is also an important issue. Ein: e Unser: in simply writes: “Afraid, angry”. The fact that the children have to wear a mask all day also occupies a follower and another writes: “How Swedes do”.

The worries are still clearly noticeable, but many are still looking positively ahead. The hope for a quiet autumn without further measures is apparently not yet completely gone.
