  • Lava has leaked from a volcanic fissure on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula, local authorities have confirmed.
  • This is the fourth time an outbreak has occurred in this region since December.

“A volcanic eruption has begun between Stora Skogfell and Hagafell on the Reykjanes Peninsula,” the Icelandic Meteorological Institute (IMO) said in a statement. Glowing lava and plumes of smoke could be seen during a live video stream.

Residents evacuated again

Because of the eruption, the tourist attraction “Blue Lagoon”, an outdoor thermal swimming pool near Grindavík, had to be evacuated. Some residents of Grindavík, who had since returned to their homes after the last eruption, were also evacuated, local media report.

Experts had expected the latest outbreak and warned against it. The volcanic eruption has no impact on air traffic, writes the airport in Reykjavík, a good 50 kilometers away, on its website.
