Framework: the modular and removable laptop PC arrives in AMD Ryzen version

Framework is a young manufacturer known for its fully configurable and removable laptops. Each component is replaceable, which allows you to have a computer that perfectly matches your needs, but above all to be able to easily improve or repair it by replacing the defective or obsolete part.

Something long awaited, the Laptop 13 finally offer motherboards equipped with AMD processors, as an alternative to the only Intel Core options available until then. Obviously, this portable PC designed for mobility relies on the Ryzen 5 and 7 CPUs of the 7040 Phoenix series.

For now, only the brand’s Laptop 13 is configurable with the latest AMD options. We can thus choose to install an AMD Ryzen 5 7640U or Ryzen 7 7840U chip. These chips, freshly launched by the Californian manufacturer, are intended above all for mobile machines with a consumption envelope contained between 15 W and 30 W. The first version is supported by a 55 Wh battery, while the Ryzen 7 model will be equipped with a larger capacity battery, 61 Wh.

The Ryzen 5 7640U chip thus embeds six physical cores and 12 logical cores for a nominal frequency of 3.5 GHz and up to 4.9 GHz in Turbo mode. The graphics part is provided by an RDNA 3 Radeon 760M chip.

For its part, the Ryzen 7 7840U has eight hyperthreaded cores operating at 3.3 GHz, but can go up to 5.1 GHz when the need arises. On the GPU side, it is a Radeon 780M chip that officiates. This configuration, very similar to that of the Asus ROG Ally console with its Ryzen Z1 Extrem APU, bodes well for good in-game performance for the Framework Laptop 13.

The new AMD configurations are already available for pre-order on the manufacturer’s website. Shipments are announced for the end of the 3rd quarter of 2023.

On the price side, the motherboard equipped with a Ryzen 5 7640U is offered at 825 € against 1215 € for the Ryzen 7 7840U version. For a complete configuration, including the Ryzen 5, four USB-C ports, 8 GB of DDR5 RAM and 256 GB of SSD, the minimum price is €1079 if you assemble it yourself.
