FRANCE: NO RISK OF ELECTRICITY SHORTAGE THIS WINTER, POMPILI ASSURES

PARIS (Reuters) – The Minister for the Ecological Transition, Barbara Pompili, assured Sunday that France did not risk facing an electricity shortage this winter after the announcement by EDF of the extension of the shutdown of the two Civaux reactors and the shutdown of the two Chooz units.

This announcement was made by EDF on Wednesday after the detection of faults near cooling circuits of the Civaux nuclear power plant in Vienne.

The extension of the shutdown of the two Civaux reactors and the shutdown of the two Chooz units will result in a loss of production for EDF of around 1 terawatt hour (TWh) at the end of 2021.

“There will be no big general blackout by the end of winter”, declared the minister at the microphone of France Inter.

Barbara Pompili asked EDF on Friday to take measures to strengthen the security of electricity supply in the short term and to carry out an audit on the availability of the French nuclear fleet.
