France/PMI: Less marked than expected contraction in the manufacturing sector

PARIS (Reuters) – Activity in the manufacturing sector in France recorded a less significant contraction in June than initially estimated, show the final results of the monthly S&P Global/Hamburg Commercial Bank survey of purchasing managers published on Monday.

The PMI manufacturing index fell last month to 46.0, after 45.5 in the first estimate and 45.7 in May.

The bar of 50 separates growth and contraction of activity.

According to Norman Liebke, economist at HCOB, the outlook for French industry remains weak and the figures published for the month of June represent the fifth consecutive month of contraction in activity in the sector in France.

“According to the PMIs, production continues to decline, new orders in France and abroad are falling and business expectations have also deteriorated considerably,” he said.
