France: slight rise in the unemployment rate

(CercleFinance.com) – In the second quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate in France (excluding Mayotte) as defined by the International Labor Office (ILO) rose by 0.1 point to 7.2% of the active population, according to the INSEE data.

The unemployment rate was thus 0.2 points below its level in the second quarter of 2022 and 3.3 points below its peak in mid-2015. It also remained very close to its lowest level measured since the second quarter of 1982 (7.1%).

Also according to the ILO, the number of unemployed increased by 20,000 compared to the previous quarter, to 2.2 million, but among the inactive people, two million wanted a job without being considered unemployed (‘halo around unemployment’) .
