PARIS, June 26 (Reuters) – The French government is preparing to restart the coal-fired power plant in Saint-Avold (Moselle), a press release from the Ministry for Energy Transition announced on Sunday, confirming information released earlier by RTL.

“As a precaution, given the Ukrainian situation, we are keeping the possibility of being able to operate the Saint-Avold power plant for a few more hours if we need it next winter. This is part of the closure plan This device as announced by the previous government can still be activated,” says a press release from the Ministry of Energy Transition.

In this press release, the ministry assures that President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to close all coal-fired power plants “remains unchanged”.

“We are going as a precautionary measure to be able to use these coal-fired power stations if we have to face a peak”, warned Thursday the Minister for Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, according to which coal, in France, accounts for less than 1% of electricity.
