French production, the new star of global SVOD

While France does not have an SVOD platform deployed internationally, as is the case for American streamers, French productions have managed to emerge to the point of representing 4% of the catalog of SVOD platforms around the world. as of July 2023, which represents approximately 5,900 works. 4% for fourth place in the ranking, which makes France the first European and most represented non-English speaking country. The world ranking is dominated by the United States (43%) followed by the United Kingdom (7.6%) and India (6.4%).

This presence of French production has a different weight depending on the nature of the programs: for cinema, French productions represent 4.6% of the world catalog (excluding France), still in 4th position; for series, French productions represent only 2.5% of the world catalog, and are only in 7th position, surpassed by Japan, South Korea and China.

No wonder, it is not in the United States that the share of French works is the largest, it is in Europe with 4.8% of French content among foreign productions available on SVOD services in Central Europe and Eastern Europe and 4.5% in Western Europe. It is lowest in Asia-Pacific (3.7%) and Latin America (2.9%). But the country which has the most French works in its SVOD catalog is Spain with 6.5% French works, followed by Italy (5.5%) and Estonia (5. 4%). On the other hand, the road is very long for our British (2.1%) and American (2.8%) friends who are in 38th position.

Finally, as far as services are concerned, there is no point in having illusions, even if certain French programs are enjoying the glory of the American behemoths, Netflix and Prime Video. Indeed, the platform which ranks in first position is Mubi with 22.4% of French programs, followed by The Criterion Channel (17.4%). At the other end of the ranking we find Netflix in 42nd position (3.7%) and 700 French titles, followed by Prime Video in 49th position (3.2%) and 1700 French titles, HBO Max and Max in 55th and 56th. position (2.9%), 6 Paramount + in 74th position (1.4%) and Disney + in 75th position (1.2%). Ultimately, among the leading global platforms in the video-on-demand sector, none exceeds the global average of 4.0%.
