French soldier accidentally dies on Reunion after illness


Jérémy Amoroso had been hospitalized after a malaise following a training on the island of Reunion. He died on December 30

The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces announced on Sunday January 2 the accidental death of Master Corporal Jérémy Amoroso. “Master Corporal 1st Class Jérémy Amoroso, 37, was an alpine hunter with a deep sense of duty and brotherhood. He leaves behind his wife and his three children ”, communicated the chief of staff of the armies.

“Rare professional and human qualities”

The soldier was the victim of discomfort Tuesday, December 28, after a “supervised and scheduled training activity” in the region of Cilaos on the island of Reunion. “After two days of hospitalization with a vital prognosis, the master corporal died on the evening of December 30,” the statement said.

Originally from Chambéry in Savoy, Jérémy Amoroso joined the army in 2003 and spent his entire career in the 13th battalion of alpine hunters of Barby, near Chambéry. He had participated in several missions in Guyana, Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, New Caledonia, Gabon and Mali. For these missions, he had been awarded several military medals.

“Throughout his career, he will have shown rare professional and human qualities, a deep sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to his country and the army”, underlined the Chief of Defense Staff.
