From Australia to Upper Austria – giant spider secretly flew to tennis tournament

The animal traveled as a stowaway between camera equipment from the Australian city of Melbourne and was only discovered in the Design Center in Linz. The whole story and many pictures can be found here.

“She’s probably a tennis fan,” joked Hans Adrowitzer, press officer at Upper Austria Ladies Linz, when he described to “Krone” how an uninvited exotic guest caused a few moments of shock. What happened? Between technical devices used for the television broadcast of the sports spectacle were flown from Melbourne to Linz, a giant crab spider was hiding. The animal took shelter in a molding where a transmission technician taped it shut until the veterinarian and fire department rushed to the Design Center to capture it. World’s Largest Spider With a leg span of up to 35 centimeters, the Huntsman is one of the largest spiders of the world. While not deadly, its venom should not be underestimated. Her appearance often frightens tourists in Australia, but she is considered relatively peaceful and is even tolerated in some households to keep smaller insects away. “Krone” visit to the Linz animal shelter The Linz specimen is probably still a baby. When “Krone” visited the animal shelter in Linz, it measured just five centimetres. Employee Nora Sudra takes care of the eight-legged friend until suitable accommodation was found: “I was also a little scared when I had to move the spider to the terrarium, but we’re getting along fine now.”
