Chip crisis: Expert expects an end as early as 2023
An end to the chip crisis will probably be a long time coming, that much is certain. Manufacturers of all kinds of industries are urgently waiting for more supplies in order to be able to continue building their products or to start up limited production capacities again. From e-cars to washing machines to game consoles, all sorts of goods are affected – and according to experts, this will continue for years to come.
Intel boss Pat Gelsinger has already pushed back his forecast that supplies will normalize again in 2023. Meanwhile, he believes that the current situation, in which manufacturers are struggling for production capacity, will last at least until 2024. But there are dissenting voices.
Alan Priestley, industry analyst from IT market researcher Gartner, is one of them. He expects that overcapacities will be produced again in the coming year (source: dpa via Zeit). In other words, while car manufacturers such as VW and electronics groups such as Sony are currently having to cut back on production because there are not enough chips, they could already do so In 2023 revel in abundance again.
Priestley believes that the chip makers’ efforts have been successful: since the first difficulties were encountered invested heavily in the construction of new factories and larger production capacities.
