Meat, fruit and vegetables will soon have a new seal – as long as they are produced in Germany. Many foods could then say “good things from German agriculture”.

According to the agricultural industry, a new label for food from Germany will go on sale from January 2024. With the origin label, consumers could recognize products from the German agriculture and food industry at first glance in food retail, the Central Coordination of Trade and Agriculture (ZKHL) in Berlin announced after signing an industry agreement.

The label is based on a voluntary commitment from all participating food retailers and manufacturers. The pioneers in the food trade are Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, Edeka, Kaufland, Lidl and Rewe Group. The uniform label of origin “Good things from German agriculture” stands for transparency and offers consumers the orientation and security they want when shopping, said Josef Sanktjohanser, CEO of the ZKHL association. The industry agreement will come into force from January 2024.

From then on, meat from pork, beef and poultry, fruit, vegetables, potatoes as well as eggs and milk could be labeled. The prerequisite is complete production in Germany – from cultivation or birth, and in the case of poultry meat also the rearing of the parent animals, to packaging.

“The Germany label of origin will ensure that our food is valued by consumers,” said farmer president Joachim Rukwied, according to the information. In the medium term, use will be made possible for other products and users such as catering and communal catering.
