A petition launched by 40 million motorists to cap the price of fuel is currently a hit. What should the government be afraid of?
Over the past two years and the war in Ukraine, the price of fuel for automobiles has seen an increase that is difficult for many consumers to cope with. Because even if there may be tips to avoid paying too much, the current result is that those who cannot do without the car on a daily basis see their budget strained by prices at the pump. We are therefore not surprised to see a petition asking for these prices to be capped at 1.5 euros to have great success.
A petition with a million signatures
The 40 million automobiles association is on deck. She wants to echo the recent discontent of French drivers, who have to face very sharply rising fuel prices – 32 cents over one year for SP95, 21 cents for diesel over the same period.
As a result, she launched a petition demanding that a liter be capped at 1.5 euros, a petition which has been very successful even though it has only just seen the light of day. According to the general delegate Pierre Chasseray, who spoke to our colleagues from Figaroit has already exceeded one million signatures, with 1,038,796 people having so far joined the movement.

The association thus explained that the increase “ corresponds to an average additional cost of just over €200 per year (+13.3%) for each motorist. “A problem obviously, especially in this era of inflation, where budgets are increasingly tight, and above all, where transport has become the number one item of household expenditure, representing 16.4% of said budget,” ahead of housing (16.3%) and food (16.1%). »
For Pierre Chasseray, the State would be able to quickly lower the price, by reducing taxes on fuel, which constitute a total of 60% of the price at the pump, and which would be similar to a ” excess taxation. » We remember that on May 29, 2018, a certain Priscillia Ludosky had posted a petition online to criticize the increase in fuel taxes, a petition which had started to make noise in September, bringing together nearly 1 million signatories, and which had been one of the origins of the Yellow Vest movement.
