Fundamental change – New Mercedes-AMG GT: It imitates the 911

The Mercedes-AMG GT should become more suitable for everyday use. The second generation of the sports car is 20 centimeters longer, which generally creates more interior space and optionally space for a second (emergency) row of seats. The latter should also help the coupé in a duel with the Porsche 911.

The closest relative of the GT, which was once again developed by the Group’s own high-performance forge AMG, is the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster, which has also recently returned to the 2+2 seat concept. The 4.73 meter new model is also visually similar, with a long bonnet and short overhangs and active rear spoiler of the brand icon renewed in 2021. The most important difference is the fixed domed roof, under which two adults can be accommodated on sports seats and two kindergarten children on a double bench. As a rule, the emergency seats in the rear are more likely to be occupied by luggage. Additional storage space can be found behind a large trunk lid. The storage space can be expanded from 321 to 675 liters by folding down the rear seat backrests. The central element in the cockpit is an 11.9-inch upright monitor running the latest MBUX infotainment software generation. It offers various AMG-specific functions such as a display of lateral acceleration. A head-up display is optionally available, as is ambient lighting with 64 colors. An aluminum thrust plate on the underbody, a magnesium instrument panel and components made of fiberglass and carbon ensure that the GT does not become too heavy due to all the comfort technology. A 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with an optional 476 hp or 585 hp coupled to an all-wheel drive with electromechanical clutch. A nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet start-up clutch selects the appropriate gear instead of the converter usually used. It would also be conceivable that the GT, like the SL, would have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 381 hp that does not require all-wheel drive technology. A plug-in hybrid drive also seems possible in the medium term. Mercedes-AMG does not name prices for the new sports car, the related SL starts with a V8 engine at just under 220,000 euros.
