In the night of December 26th, an apartment building was in flames in Hindelbank in Bern. The residents, a total of 17 people, were all able to save themselves. However, many lost all their belongings. The community then started a fundraising campaign. In the first five days, donations in cash and in kind valued at several thousand francs were made. According to mayor Daniel Wenger, the value of the donated amount is in the lower five-digit range. «We were very surprised at the size of the amount. We did not expect such a large sum after such a short time. We are curious to see how the fundraising campaign will develop, ”Wenger told 20 Minuten. He doesn’t want to give the exact amount.
The heavily damaged building with attached farmhouse is meanwhile uninhabitable. Thanks to a large number of fire brigades from Hindelbank, Regio Kirchberg, Burgdorf, Krauchthal and the professional fire brigade from Protection and Rescue Bern, the flames were extinguished. The cause of the fire is so far unknown. No people were injured in the fire. Those affected were able to stay with relatives and friends.
The fate of the families has triggered a wave of solidarity in Hindelbank and the surrounding villages. The mayor said: “It is surprising how high the individual amounts were – for example, there were companies that donated four-digit amounts.”

Dominic Frei from the “Hope Bern” association, who takes care of the donations in kind, has received numerous emails so far. «Most of the donations are clothes, but a lot of furniture is also offered. But there were also more exotic things, such as computers and other entertainment media»Says Frei about 20 minutes.
