The living room usually plays the main role in our apartment. There we spend most of the day, we relax, together with dear people and pets, maybe we work and eat there too. It is all the more important that we use the space optimally and design it in such a way that we feel comfortable there. Do you have the feeling that your living room somehow seems smaller than it actually is? Then you might do one or more of these setup error.

3 interior faux pas that can make your living room look smaller

1. Colors used incorrectly

Not all people like bright, neutral colors in a Scandi style. Maybe you are one of those people who prefer intense, maybe even dark tones. The problem: Basically, dark colors make a room smaller, while light ones make it appear larger.

But that doesn’t mean that you have to do without intense nuances like bottle green or midnight blue entirely. Rather, it is about using them correctly. If you like dark colors on the walls, for example, then it is best to opt for one or two accent walls in this tone – because all four walls in dark nuances quickly appear cramped and make the room appear smaller. This can be overwhelming, especially in the living room.

2. The wrong furniture

Also the choice of Furniture plays an important role in how big or small the living room feels. sofa, Table and Co. should not be too big – otherwise the room will quickly appear overcrowded. But they shouldn’t be too small either, because even then the proportions won’t be right.

Many people also make the mistake of practically “gluing” all their furniture to the walls. You may feel like you’re making the most of the space, but in fact, it’s a lack of airiness in the room. It is better to place at least some pieces of furniture – perhaps the dining area or the sofa – with a little distance to the wall. This makes the living room appear larger and more open.

3. Clutter

Another important point, which unfortunately often contributes to visually reducing the size of a room, is clutter. Many everyday objects often accumulate in the living room in particular – loose notes, books, magazines, packaging, charging cables and other stuff. Such chaos makes the room look unnecessarily cluttered. Therefore, you should make sure to keep things tidy. For example, work with baskets or boxingto collect things that you use regularly but cause a nuisance when they are lying around on tables or dressers.
