Future AirPods could verify that you are doing your sports exercises well

A new feature would be under study at Apple: it would be to detect the movements and positioning of the user’s body via the AirPods. The information sent directly to Fitness+ would allow the sports training service to verify that you are performing your exercises correctly.

Apple regularly files new technology patents. One of the latest patents filed by the firm highlights a new function for Apple’s Bluetooth headphones, the next AirPods. The latter could be equipped with sensors which, associated with Apple Fitness +, would make it possible to monitor whether the sports exercises are well carried out by the user.

This feature would therefore potentially be designed to work with future AiPods and would work hand in hand with the Fitness+ service, available on the Apple Watch within the Form application. Indeed, Fitness+ offers a number of sports programs, precisely 11 different types of exercises (muscle strengthening, yoga, dance, cycling, etc.), designed by coaches. For the moment, it is impossible for the watch to verify that you have performed the recommended exercises. However, this new function would use the accelerometer implanted in the headphones to detect and check the different positions of your body.

The patent filed by Apple in October 2021 with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) is thus named ” Wireless earphone system with posture detection ».

The patent description states that“Headphones may have sensors to collect orientation information such as accelerometer readings, as the user moves”. As the name of the patent indicates, it is thus a system capable of detecting the positions of the user’s body. The recognition of the different movements would thus be based on the variations in the positions of the user’s head. A first “framework “, corresponding to a neutral head position, would be used as a reference point. It is also mentioned that the headphones could additionally “use a rotation matrix ».

The first headphones being able to offer this option could well be the future AirPods Pro 2. The recent rumors concerning the latter indeed mentioned the integration of motion sensors and a gyroscope. We also learned, last October, that Apple intends to make its wireless headphones real devices used to assess your health.
