After the resignation of Élisabeth Borne, the name of the new Prime Minister has not yet been communicated by Emmanuel Macron. The head of state should announce it this Tuesday morning. In the meantime, the predictions are going well. Among the most serious avenues: the appointment of Gabriel Attal, faithful to Macronie since the beginning.
The political world suspended on Emmanuel Macron’s decision. After the resignation of Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne this Monday, the head of state has not yet revealed the name of the person who will now occupy Matignon’s office. And while the President of the Republic should reveal the name of the new head of government in the morning, Gabriel Attal is increasingly presented as the big favorite to take the post.
An almost faultless political career
The current Minister of National Education would then become the youngest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic, while the latter has climbed the ranks of power in a meteoric manner in recent years. Prodigy student of the macronie, Gabriel Attal has had an almost faultless political career. After studying at Sciences Po Paris, he first campaigned for the Socialist Party. Ambitious, he was barely 23 years old when he joined the cabinet of Marisol Touraine, then Minister of Health under François Hollande.
In 2016, he joined En Marche, Emmanuel Macron’s party. Then, the following year, he was elected deputy for Hauts-de-Seine. He entered the government in 2018 as Secretary of State for Youth, at only 29 years old. He was then appointed spokesperson under Jean Castex between 2020 and 2022 and during the re-election of Emmanuel Macron, the president offered him the portfolio of relations with Parliament. But he plans to regain his seat in the National Assembly.
A credible candidate for 2027?
He finally obtained the post of Minister for Public Accounts before moving to the Ministry of Education six months ago. From there, his popularity skyrocketed, so much so that polls named him the favorite minister of the French. Gabriel Attal becomes a credible candidate for the Élysée in 2027. But to win, he may have to survive the hell of Matignon.
