This Monday, January 8, after several weeks of rumors concerning a possible ministerial reshuffle, Élisabeth Borne presented her resignation to Emmanuel Macron, who accepted it. Since then, a crucial question has hovered in the corridors of Matignon: who would the President of the Republic consider to replace the former Prime Minister? As Le Parisien revealed, the day after the news, a name is already emerging in circles close to the Élysée: Gabriel Attal. According to our colleagues, the one who was appointed to the Ministry of National Education almost five months ago could meet the expectations of the Head of State. “Macron wanted to take the most popular guy. The right loves Attal”, assured someone close to the matter. But that’s not all ! Some observers believe that the 34-year-old politician with a discreet private life would even have the ideal profile. “Attal is the best of us”, notably detailed an intimate of Emmanuel Macron.
Conversely, other political figures would be more reluctant to appoint Gabriel Attal to Matignon. And for good reason: the latter judge thatit is still too early to put an end to his adventure at the Ministry of National Education. “Gabriel Attal, that would be a lot. In politics, the evil is turnover.” explained a minister to our colleagues. An opinion that the President of the Republic nevertheless does not seem to share. Emmanuel Macron: this other political personality expected at Matignon
For the moment, the name of Gabriel Attal for the post of Prime Minister has only emerged among other names. Indeed, other observers have also assured that Sébastien Lecornu had a particular chance of replacing Élisabeth Borne. The appointment of the current Minister of the Armed Forces at the head of Matignon could then signal a significant turning point in Emmanuel Macron’s strategy. “This is a real option if Élisabeth Borne has to leave“, had mentioned a close friend of the President to Parisian. By choosing a prominent member of the Republicans, the President would send a strong signal of rapprochement towards the right, while seeking to relaunch his Government after a particularly trying period. Sébastien Lecornu, known for his experience and stature within government, could embody this new breath that Macron wishes to bring.
