Gabriel Attal, new Prime Minister: “He is condemned to disappoint,” says Sébastien Chenu

INTERVIEW

Gabriel Attal, the new youth asset of Macronie? Officially appointed Prime Minister this Tuesday by Emmanuel Macron, Gabriel Attal became in fact at 34 the youngest Prime Minister in the history of the Fifth Republic. And for the presidential camp, the strategy is clear: take advantage of the popularity of the young minister, “the French’s favorite political personality” according to an Ipsos survey published last December. But also, placing the cadet in front of another young face on the political landscape: Jordan Bardella, of the National Rally.

“This government is adjusting to us”

Barely named, it is already thought of as an “anti-Jordan Bardella weapon”. “I’m wary of all that. Because I remember the anti-National Rally weapon that was Gérald Darmanin. The least we can say is that it’s a weapon that has stalled a little, that’s not the case. “did not produce the expected effects”, notes Sébastien Chenu, vice-president of the National Assembly and deputy of the National Rally of the North, guest of the Great Europe 1-CNews interview this Wednesday.

“When the government seeks to fight us, it tries to go on themes that we know and on which we have been working for a long time. And what I like is that in fact this government, it adjusts to us, (…) but he doesn’t go all the way. So of course, it’s not success. And now he said to himself: ‘The National Rally has a young president, he is popular. Let’s look at what we have in store. We have a popular young man called Gabriel Attal and we’re going to try to do something with him,” analyzes the MP.

For the vice-president of the National Assembly, if the young men resemble each other on the surface, in terms of their communication strategy and their profile, “they do not offer the same thing at all”. “I believe that Gabriel Attal will suffer exactly what the immigration law suffered. That is to say that in reality, he is condemned to disappoint because he is condemned to apply Emmanuel Macron’s policy and will not not get out. He was also chosen for that,” concludes Sébastien Chenu. Many projects await the new Prime Minister, starting with the expansion of the majority, the European elections and the bill on the end of life.
