Since the failure of Google Glasses, the connected glasses market has stagnated. New models designed for augmented reality are still starting to emerge, such as Oppo’s Air Glass 2 or Lenovo’s Glasses T1 and Legion Glasses. For its part, Samsung has remained fairly discreet around this product category. However, recent discoveries from media Galaxy Club indicate that the Korean giant could well be active in this area.
Galaxy Glasses still under development
For many months, even years, rumors in the corridors have mentioned the development of new connected products at Samsung. While a first ring is expected next year, information concerning augmented reality glasses, potentially called Galaxy Glasses, has just come out.
In a recent publication, Galaxy Club reveals that Samsung Display has registered several trademarks and logos in South Korea: Magic Pixel, Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel. The most interesting thing in the story is that the field of protection of these three brands explicitly mentions applications linked to augmented reality glasses: “3D glasses”, “virtual reality glasses”, “virtual reality headset”, “virtual reality glasses” or “smart glasses”.
In terms of denominations, several clues could be hidden behind these names. Our colleagues from Frandroid notably interpret “Magic Pixel” as potential micro-Oled panels made up of tiny pixels, perfect for the screens of virtual reality headsets and glasses. Concerning “Flex”, it could be a term designating flexible screens, like Samsung’s Flex Oled technology, which can thus offer a curved display for better immersion.
The launch period for Samsung smart glasses is still unknown. These trademark registrations only confirm that Samsung Display is indeed working on screens that can be used on this type of device. However, it should be remembered that this branch of Samsung also markets screens intended for other manufacturers, which the latter use on their own products. As a result, we could very well see these panels arriving on connected glasses competing with Galaxy Glasses in the months or years to come.
