Galaxy S24: Samsung formalizes its Gauss AI, and unveils a new feature

During a forum dedicated to artificial intelligence in South Korea, Samsung introduced its first in-house generative AI model: Gauss. In the process, the Korean giant unveiled Galaxy AI, and teased one of the first AI-based features of the upcoming Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra.

Samsung makes a breakthrough in AI with Gauss

After Grok, Bard and ChatGPT, Samsung enters the dance with Gauss. A name which directly refers to Carl Friedrich Gauss, a mathematician who provided several foundations of AI. The South Korean giant presented several artificial intelligence tools for the occasion.

First of all, we learn about the existence of Samsung Gauss Language, the language model developed by Samsung. A conversational agent simply called Samsung Gauss, a competitor to ChatGPT, will work on its basis.

To facilitate the design of applications by developers, an AI is included: Samsung Gauss Code. Finally, the chaebol unveiled Samsung Gauss Image, intended as its name suggests to generate images, a new competitor to Midjourney.

Announced ahead of the official release of the Galaxy S24 at the start of next year, Gauss is currently reserved for Samsung employees. No demonstration has been made. However, a first function for Galaxy smartphones has been announced.

Real-time translation during a call

In a blog post, Samsung clarifies its ambitions around artificial intelligence for its Galaxy smartphones. “Galaxy AI is universal intelligence on your phone like you’ve never seen before. In all the areas where it matters most — from borderless communication to simplified productivity to seamless creativity. constraint — we unlock new possibilities.”

Samsung specifies that Galaxy AI will be powered both natively by AI on its next smartphones, but also via the cloud. In order to teaser the artificial intelligence capabilities of its future flagships, the South Korean firm has unveiled a first functionality: AI Live Translate Call.

The objective is clear: to offer users “a personal translator whenever they need one”. Integrated directly into the native calling function of Galaxy smartphones, AI Live Translate Call will display real-time translations of spoken words in text form, allowing you to understand a foreign interlocutor and hold a conversation with them without obstacles.

Samsung concluded by emphasizing that Galaxy AI would be available from “beginning of next year”, most likely on the Galaxy S24, expected for mid-January 2024.
