Is video games an art? A debate as old as the first game, even if we increasingly agree that there are links between art and certain video games. And this player is showing it to us today with Animal Crossing New Horizons.

When we talk about art and video games, we don’t necessarily think of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It must be said that the title does not have an atypical and breathtaking artistic direction, or a deeply poetic and dreamlike message. And yet, the last opus of the series insisted on giving art a special place. Since an update dating from April 2020 (a short month after the game’s release), a wing of the museum managed by Thibou has been dedicated to works of art. Paintings and sculptures of the greatest can therefore be exhibited on your island.
This little mechanism is not new. Animal Crossing: New Leaf also introduced sculptures into the game. And in this opus, it was only possible to obtain the works by purchasing them from Rounard (the fox of course). The problem is that the guy didn’t only sell real ones. It was then up to the players to detect which works were real and which works were counterfeits. But no need to have an eagle eye for the painting that interests us today. For this fanart made by a player, no doubt, it is a fake of a well-known work of art. But the wink is particularly well thought out and beautifully done!
Nighthawks x New Horizons
Do you know the table Nighthawks by Edward Hopper? Created in 1942, this work, which today belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago, is very well known. At first glance simple and refined, it nevertheless brings together the themes most dear to the artist representing American realism, namely love, death and solitude. And she has since inspired many other artists. This is why we find this painting in the comic strip Blacksadsome scenes from the film Equalizer or even in the fighting video game Skullgirls. And obviously, he also inspired this Animal Crossing player.
It is under the pseudonym of Bluepotionart on Reddit that he published his work, a mixture between Nighthawks and Café de Robusto in New Horizons. And it must be said that the result is stunning. This means that players’ imaginations really have no limits, much to our great pleasure. This pretty fanart will perhaps push Nintendo to consider Nighthawks as a new collectible work for the museum during a new update… Better yet, the fanart of Bluepotionart would definitely deserve its place in the museum. This seems unlikely, but you should never say never it seems!
