Rogue Prince of Persia, the latest addition to Ubisoft’s cult series, is scheduled for May 2024. A clever mix of the license with gameplay close to the nugget Dead Cells, this new title places the Prince of Persia as one of the new faces figurehead of the metroidvania.

Rogue (lite) Prince of Persia

After Prince of Persia The Lost Crown, this time it’s Evil Empire, known for having worked alongside Motion Twin on Dead Cells, who is in charge. Rogue Prince of Persia tells the story of the said Prince, in his fight against the invasion of the Huns which he himself provoked. They, corrupted by dark magic, will not give him a chance. However, equipped with a magic necklace allowing him to go back in the event of failure and/or death, the Prince intends to protect Persia and save his kingdom.

In 2D gameplay with colorful graphics, the title fully embraces the rogue-lite and metroidvania genres, while including numerous reminders of the old titles of the license. The Prince can, if necessary, climb walls and grab onto various ledges or descend more safely by letting your blade slide along the walls. This system offers vertical movements quite refreshing for the genre.

Between Persian tradition and French modernity

With his eldest, Rogue Prince of Persia returns to the origins of the saga, while remaining very accessible. Without being devoid of difficulty, its graphics inspired by Franco-Belgian comics offer very good readability among the hordes of enemies and other traps. More nervous than The Lost Crownthe title enjoys a fluidity which brings it very close to Dead Cellshis primary inspiration. Death is also an inherent part of the game. In keeping with the rogue-lite genre, each defeat can reveal new story elements as well as new characters, items, areas and paths that encourage further exploration.

Here, death is less of a punishment and more of a way to expand your gameplay options. For example, a blacksmith is present in the hub and sometimes in the levels, allowing you to exchange your rewards for weapon upgrades of the prince, which will then be recoverable in a future game. The gameplay, like its inspiration and the curses, embarks a betting system where, in exchange for VP, it is possible to obtain devastating weapons to spice up the runs. The title will be available in early access from May 14, and to learn more, do not hesitate to consult our dedicated column!
