Big victory for Epic Games: Fortnite will finally make its return to iOS devices, but only in Europe.
Fortnite is back on iOS
When we thought we would never see again Fortnite on Apple devices, the Epic Games game is preparing to return to iOS. The announcement follows new directives from the European Union which force the Apple firm to open its operating system to third-party applications.
As a reminder, Apple and Epic Games entered into conflict in 2020 when the studio decided to circumvent the firm’s rules on payment. Apple then took 30% of all transactions carried out on its devices, a rule that Epic Games tried to circumvent by redirecting players to its official website. Therefore, Apple decided to ban Fortnite from the App Store last summer.

One outing during the year
That was before the European Union came on the scene. With the Digital Markets Act, the EU is forcing Apple to open its operating system to all third-party applications. Fortnite remains banned from the App Store, but Epic Games has announced the upcoming arrival on iOS of the Epic Games Store. The studio promises a release “later this year” only in Europe.

This is therefore excellent news for Apple players, but also for all iOS users who wanted to import different applications onto their devices. With the Digital Markets Act, Google will, for example, be able to offer the full version of its flagship search engine, Google Chrome. However, it remains to be seen how DMA could impact the security of iOS devices.
