Launched in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 initially destroyed a good part of players’ confidence in the studio. Patched in every way, equipped with a lot of free content and then an excellent extension, the CD Projekt title has become a great success.

Cyberpunk 2077: from scandal to “very positive” reviews

Announced at the beginning of the 2010s then left aside in favor of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which occupied all the resources of CD Projekt, Cyberpunk 2077 finally arrived on December 10, 2020. Equipped with a huge marketing campaign and postponed several times, the first-person action-RPG was extremely anticipated. Crowned with glory with Geralt’s latest adventures, However, the studio made a mistake. At release, the title needed a high-end PC or a powerful cloud gaming service to run properly, but that was the least of the problems.

Available on PS4 and Xbox One, the title performed extremely poorly, with very significant bugs and major performance issues. Enough to spoil the experience of many players, who could not take advantage of this striking open city and yet the many qualities of the game. The situation became so problematic that Sony removed the game from its online store while things are fixed. CD Projekt apologized, offered refunds, and promised updates would be rolled out.

The studio kept its promise, and a large number of major updates have improved performance, fixed thousands of bugs, and added features and content. Little by little, the players’ opinions returned to the positive and the title currently enjoys very good general appreciation. The release of the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion (reserved for PC and next-gen consoles), associated with a 2.0 update and the arrival of the “next-gen” version on PS5 and Xbox Series, has finished restore its letters of nobility to Cyberpunk 2077. We can speak of a form of redemption for this production, but be careful with this narrative. The state of Cyberpunk 2077 upon release on PS4 and One is the result of internal decisions, not chance.

Cyberpunk 2077 is nearly 700 million euros generated

As part of the publication of its latest financial report, CD Projekt announced that more than 400 developers are now working on The Witcher: Polaris, but not only. The company also recalled that Cyberpunk 2077 was sold more than 25 million units worldwide, and that he had brought in a lot of money. The title and its extension Phantom Liberty brought in more than three billion złotys, or around 697 million euros. The bulk of this sum was generated in 2020, with 1,404 million złotys (326 million euros). 2021 and 2022 were much quieter, but the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion and patch 2.0 in 2023 largely boosted salesgenerating an additional 826 million zlotys (192 million euros).

A few updates are still expected, but the Cyberpunk 2077 team is now reduced to nothing with only 17 people. If most of the developers work on The Witcher: Polaris, CD Projekt has already set up a small team to lay the first stones of the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. The Orion project currently involves 47 peopleand we imagine that this number will only increase slightly until the next The Witcher is in a very advanced state.
