Released on February 21, the trailer for the Elden Ring Shadow of the ErdTree DLC rekindled the desire among players to return to the Underworld. Others have been through it long enough to overpower every enemy there. Something damaging to the DLC? The FromSoftware studio also thought of seasoned players by integrating mechanics from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, their previous game.

Shadow of the ErdTree: a story for old and new players

Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the ErdTree, is released on June 21 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series. The release date for this additional content was revealed at the end of the gameplay trailer released on February 21. This trailer, the first for Shadow of the ErdTree, has reinstilled in players the desire to travel Between Earth again. Some to give themselves the chance to complete the game, others to simply enjoy the adventure once again. On this subject, the project director said: by its design, the DLC is aimed at both brand new players and regulars.

As for the relationship with the first game’s endings, progressing events in the main game will not affect the DLC area and vice versa. This is a deliberate choice, because we wanted the DLC to be a game in its own right. We wanted the experience to be fresh for new and returning players alike.

Comments he made during his interview with JV when he was asked about the storyline of Shadow of the ErdTree. But what about from a gameplay perspective? How has FromSoftware taken into account the players who, since February 25, 2022, have become killing machines that nothing can stop? In other words, how can the studio deliver a demanding experience for players who have maxed out everything since the game’s release?

Elden Ring Shadow of the ErdTree: an attack power exclusive to the DLC

A simple question but not necessarily obvious. It was our colleagues at Famitsu who asked him the question (the interview translated here by Reddit user theangryfurlong). Asked about the presence of new mechanics, Hidetaka Miyazaki addresses the new categories of weapons but also… that of increasing power:

Think about the attack power system in Sekiro. Separate from the original level system, there is an “attack power” which is only activated in areas of the DLC. This way, you can explore other areas before returning to face bosses that were too strong the first time, allowing you to experience them more easily, even at a high level. On the other hand, by keeping your attack power low, you can also experience this challenge at a lower level.

In fact, the main difficulty of Sekiro was that it was almost impossible to power up voluntarily.. This very often involved victory against the game’s various bosses. Once defeated, the player could recover a memory exchangeable for attack power.

It is therefore this principle which is used for Shadow of the ErdTree. It is combined with an upgrade of enemies according to the players’ level, in order to prevent too large a level gap. Enough to promise, on paper, that Shadow of the ErdTree is at least as hard as Elden Ring. Answer on June 21 with the release of the game to be sure.
