But the troubles of Rockstar Games did not stop there, since the game’s announcement trailer was leaked the day before its official release in December 2023. This leak forced the publisher to publish the trailer in advance, and the identity of the leaker remains secret even today. In other words, fate seems to be bent on GTA VIand the title of Rockstar is not safe from new leaks before its launch in 2025… Unless the developers decide to opt for a new technology presented at the Game Developers Conference 2024 these days.
Towards a future without leaks?
You may already know this, but Denuvo, an anti-piracy protection technology launched in 2014, is quite popular with developers for the sake of protection against leaks and the distribution of online games. Among the games that use this technology, we find titles like Dragon Age Inquisition, Just Cause 3, Rise of the Tomb Raiderand even Death Stranding. But this tool is probably evolving, since Irdetothe company that acquired Denuvo in 2018, recently presented his new project: Denuvo TraceMark for Gamesa technology that allows you to add a watermark or ID invisible in game files in order to be able to determine the source of a leak.
With TraceMark, developers could track the origin of a leak simply by noting the invisible ID affixed by the software, which could deter some leakers. Good news from the developers’ point of view, but perhaps less from the players’ point of view given the controversy surrounding Denuvo for several years. Indeed, the software has been criticized on numerous occasions because it requires you to be constantly connected to the Internet to play, but also because it would be responsible for a drop in performance on certain games, and more precisely for longer loading times. longer, frame drops, and much higher memory usage. Denuvo was even removed from games like Resident Evil 2 (2019) And Devil May Cry 5 for these reasons. It remains to be seen whether the developers will ignore performance or not…
