If the second episode sparked a lot of controversy, The Last of Us is undoubtedly one of the most popular sagas in contemporary video games. More focused on the characters and their relationships, certain slightly more torrid passages however made the author of the game uncomfortable.

Neil Druckman wasn’t very comfortable writing the intimate scenes

The Last of Us saga has not finished making headlines. In 2013, Naughty Dog surprised gamers by offering a new original game on PS3. It didn’t take long for them to fall in love with the adventures of Joel and Ellie as the narrative of the game was so striking, which obviously led to the arrival of a second episode to conclude the story. Released in 2020 on PlayStation 4, The Last of Us Part II initially sparked a lot of controversy despite its many qualities. Recently, the game returned to PS5 thanks to a remastered version, and the universe created by Neil Druckmann was even entitled to a series adaptation broadcast on Amazon Prime Video. But When writing the story of this second episode, the creator of the saga was not always very comfortable.

In a documentary published a few days ago on YouTube, Neil Druckmann has indeed admitted to having had a lot of difficulty writing the most intimate passages of The Last of Us Part II. Fortunately, he was not alone at the time since he had called on Halley Gross to help him create this sequel. He actually wanted The Last of Us Part II to be more “epic and ambitious” than the first episode, and therefore needed help to achieve this. It was also this co-author who initiated most of these slightly more carnal moments, which she considered necessary to make the story closer to the characters. From his first days on the job, Halley Gross therefore spotted a few elements to add to make everything more romantic and intimate, something Druckmann had difficulty doing himself:

These are the parts that made me most uncomfortable while writing. After the first day, she (Halley Gross, editor’s note) told me that she came home and told her husband “I think I just got Ellie’s girlfriend pregnant”. It was his big idea on his first day, and it had enough impact to add a lot to the story.

A complete documentary that reveals a lot

If you liked The Last of Us Part II and you don’t know what to do while waiting for a potential sequel or season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video adaptation, the developers have thought of you! In fact, just a few days ago, they published a long documentary on YouTube covering many different aspects of the creation of the game. Called Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II, this documentary is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the genesis of the game but also its sequel. For example, we can discover that this sequel was originally supposed to be very different from the first game since the developers at Naughty Dog wanted to create an open-world inspired by Bloodborne. They also explain that they wanted The Last of Us Part II to be “as different as humanly possible from the first game”. While we would be very curious to see what such a mix could have looked like, we will have to settle for the game that they ended up releasing.

But the information that really caused a reaction within this documentary was the first indication of a potential sequel to the saga. Indeed, as we spoke to you about in this articleNeil Druckmann confirmed that he kept in mind the idea ofa new game (or a new audiovisual adaptation) centered on Tommy, Joel’s brother. Of course, nothing has been put into production yet, but it should be enough to please fans of the saga. Even better, the creator of the game has almost confirmed the future existence of a certain The Last of Us Part III saying that he “there might well be another chapter” . Be careful though, even if this announcement has all the appearance of being official in such a context, Neil Druckmann still uses the conditional and specifies that he has only thought of a concept for the moment. Only time will tell if it will really develop into a true third installment.
