Is it possible for a studio known for its cute and colorful games to venture into violence and eroticism?

If technically our video games today can show everything in the smallest details, from the wrinkles of a face to the veins of muscles, censorship, even self-censorship, would prevent certain creators from launching more “dared”. We’re not going to go into the complicated relationship between erotica and video games, but there are many different issues that studios face when they want to display nudity. We remember the buttocks affair from DMC 5’s Discord, or the hidden sexual attributes of Conan Exiles in certain regions. At a time when the extreme violence of Mortal Kombat is not moderated, eroticism and nudity continue to pose problems. Even recently, players were banned from Xbox Live because they shared romance scenes from Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Microsoft network.
In Japan in 2019, Kenichiro Takaki left Marvelous due to a dispute over the sexualization of Senran Kagura’s heroines. THE “huge boobs producer” felt that the current trend had a chilling effect on developers, and that erotic gags were taken far too seriously. More recently, it was the CEO of Level-5, Akihiro Hino who expressed his desire to produce erotic and violent games, but that his current situation did not allow it.

A more daring Kuni?
In an interview organized by Denfaminicogamer bringing together Goichi Suda from Grasshopper Manufacture and Akihiro Hino from Level-5, the boss of Level-5 admitted his admiration for “creators who can launch bold titles”. “If I had to put it in more extreme terms, I would go so far as to say that I want to create erotic games and 18+ games with violence” he added. With Hino responsible for fun and colorful franchises ranging from Professor Layton to Yo-kai Watch (to Ni No Kuni), he recognizes that he unfortunately can’t explore “his abnormal ideas” that he “in stock”. “However, deep down I really want to go” he added. “Once I feel Level-5 stable and have the space to do what I want…I will” he promises.
