Game of Thrones: after the end of this episode, waiting a year was very complicated for fans

A look back at the last episode of season 5 of “Game of Thrones”, and its final sequence which, in 2015, shocked hundreds of thousands of fans.

SPOILERS – Warning, the article below reveals potential spoilers. If you do not wish to know its contents, please do not read what follows…

The traumatic decapitation of Ned Stark in the first season of the series, the unforgettable shock of the Red Wedding in season 3, the unexpected poisoning of Joffrey Baratheon-Lannister in season 4, or the memorable and merciless duel between the Viper and the Mountain, a few episodes later…

Since the broadcast of its pilot on HBO in April 2011 until its final chapter revealed in 2019, the series Game of Thrones (adapted from the work of George RR Martin) will have thrilled millions of fans around the world.

In the middle of the series, however, the last sequence of season 5 probably made the spectators shudder with even more ardor than usual. Creating a veritable tsunami on the evening of its broadcast (June 14, 2015), the scene had all the more impact as it closed the season, and would therefore leave the public hungry for more than 10 months (season 6 not being broadcast until April of the following year).

Titled The Mercy of the Motherthis tenth and final episode of season 5 had already reserved many surprises for Game of Thrones fans: the defeat of Stannis Baratheon’s army and the death of the latter, executed by Brienne, the escape of Sansa and Theon, the exile of Daenerys, the poisoning of Myrcella, and of course Cersei’s “walk of shame” through the streets of King’s Landing.

After all these emotions, we would have expected the writers of the series to let us leave with a gentler conclusion, just to calmly digest the rest of the episode. It would have been very bad to know them!

So, it was in the grounds of Castle Black, at the foot of the Wall, that the directors of Game of Thrones took us for the last minutes of this episode 10.

After Samwell’s departure for Oldtown and the announcement of Stannis’ fall, Jon Snow prepared for his next operation, having recently welcomed Wildlings against the advice of his men.

Called in the middle of the night into the snowy courtyard of the fortress, he then faced a violent and sudden mutiny, stabbed without warning by his “faithful” subordinates.

After receiving several stab wounds in the back, the young commander collapsed to the ground, and the last shot of the episode showed him lying on the snow, gradually bleeding out.

An image which, from the evening of the broadcast, had considerably panicked social networks, and had fueled discussions among fans for many months. Fortunately, as some might have suspected, this death was not final, and Jon Snow was therefore resurrected by Melisandre in the second episode of season 6, the following year.
