In an interview granted to the British version of GQ, Maisie Williams returned to the role of Arya Stark that she played in “Game of Thrones”, and the difficult relationship that she had with this character during her adolescence.
Maisie Williams was 12 years old in 2009 when she was cast in the role in what would become the most popular series in television history. A very special experience for a young girl who is entering puberty, and whose body is about to evolve. Maisie Williams remembers the day when she was offered to wear a bra for the first time. A moment of rupture between the woman she was becoming, and the tomboyish image of her character.
“I think when I started becoming a woman, I resented Arya because I couldn’t express who I was becoming. And then I also resented my body, because it was not aligned with this aspect of me that the world celebrated, ”she confides.
Asked if there’s one thing she particularly regrets about that time, Maisie Williams asks, “Can I say none?” Before specifying: “I don’t think it’s healthy to have regrets, because I loved doing that. I look back with emotion, and I take great pride in it. But why would I want to feel sad about the best thing that ever happened to me? I don’t want to associate this experience with a feeling of pain,” she explains.
The 24-year-old admits, however, that it was not easy for her to constantly have to hide her evolution as a woman in order to correspond to the expectations of her character. “They put a ribbon on my chest to hide his development. I don’t know, it was very unpleasant to live for six months of the year, and I felt ashamed for a while”, adds the actress who is happy today to be able to be “more feminine”, and to be able freely accept his body.
