After House of the DragonHBO continues to go back in time in the universe of Game Of Thrones.
The channel is developing a new spin-off series set before the Iron Throne was even forged, and centered on Aegon the Conqueror. And we have just learned who is the screenwriter responsible for bringing this future spin-off series to life.
From Batman to Conqueror
According to The Hollywood ReporterHBO has recruited popular screenwriter Mattson Tomlin to develop this new spin-off dedicated to Aegon Targaryen, known as “the Conqueror”, first king of the Seven Kingdoms and forger of the Iron Throne.
Tomlin previously worked (uncredited) on the film The Batman by Matt Reeves, then co-wrote the screenplay for The Batman Part 2 with the latter. He also wrote the screenplay for the film BRZRKRadapted from the comic book of the same name, expected in theaters soon with Keanu Reeves in the lead, and occupies the position of showrunner on an animated series Terminator planned on Netflix.
In addition to his work as showrunner and screenwriter, Tomlin also tried his hand at directing in 2021 with the science fiction film Mother/Androidwhich he wrote, with Chloë Grace Moretz in the cast.
A prequel to House of the Dragon
This new series from Game Of Thrones is essentially a direct prequel to the spin-off House of the Dragon. The story of Aegon’s conquest is indeed the story of the bloody and brutal arrival of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros.
The series therefore promises to follow Aegon Targaryen who, with his sisters/wives Rhaenys and Visenya and their dragons, invaded the continent of Westeros and conquered its kingdoms. In just two years, he managed to unify six of the Seven Kingdoms, Dorne being the only one to be able to resist him.
With this project, we therefore expect more of a series in the spirit of Game Of Throneswith great battles and conflicts between several nations, than a show focused mainly on a single house, as is House of the Dragon.
Note that this series is not the only HBO spin-off project concerning the universe imagined by George RR Martin. If we wait for season 2 ofHouse of the Dragon next summer on HBO (and in France on Prime Video’s Warner Pass), another series is also in the pipeline.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, adaptation of novels Tales of Dunk & Egg by Martin dedicated to the adventures of Ser Duncan the Great, aka Dunk, and his young squire Aegon Targaryen (fifth of the name), was ordered by HBO and will begin filming this year.
So we’re not done spending time in Westeros.
