When should we consider ourselves a gamer? This qualifier, which may seem obvious since we often play video games, does not go without saying for everyone… The proof!

To be or not to be a “gamer”, that is the question! For example, do you consider yourself as such? If the answer may seem obvious – especially for you who read JV -, the subject is in fact more complicated than it seems… As proof, this testimony on Reddit, published a few days ago. In this one, a father – after 30 years of intensive playing video games – realized how important this medium had been in his life and that, therefore, he can define himself as a gamer: “It may seem stupid, but I have never considered myself as such,” he writes on the forum.

Do your “gaming out”

Further down the page, we can learn how our man (VerySlyBoots, his pseudonym) came to this conclusion. “My children are now old enough to play video games and my daughter asked me what kind of games I played when I was little,” we can read! “So, while visiting my parents, she and I started searching the garage and lo and behold we found NES, PS1, N64 and PS2 games”… VerySlyBoots then says he is “shocked” at the number of boxes passing before his eyes. “I asked my mother how much time I spent playing when I was a child and she said a lot,” says the father. “I suddenly realized how huge video games were for me (…) and how I managed to get through difficult times in my life by diving into a virtual adventure” ! The man also explains that he never shared this hobby with “friends or family”, and that the fun was limited to solo practice.

It might sound silly, but I never considered myself a gamer until I realized I’ve played hundreds of video games over 30 years.

To be or not to be a gamer

Is it enough to play video games regularly to be a gamer? Well no. By the way, the podcast Walkthrough, hosted by journalist Lucie Ronfaut | Hugo Terra (from the Game Next Door YouTube channel), dedicated an entire episode to the question… And imagine that the co-host, despite his multiple broadcasts on video games, does not consider himself a gamer. “At one point, without thinking badly, I said “yes but you, Hugo, are a gamer”, and then Hugo told me “no”” says Lucie Ronfaut. “In my head – in my clichés that I had about gamers – for me, Hugo completely corresponded to this archetype”. Walkthrough and all its episodes are available on Spotify, Acast or iTunes.
