Gartner: The golden age of buzzword consultants is coming

4.5 trillion US dollars, an increase of 5.1 percent – according to Gartner, IT spending will increase significantly worldwide in 2022. The market researchers believe that the future is now returning for CIOs. However, according to their own statements, the previous year saw overall growth of 9 percent. The outlook for 2023, on the other hand, is stable: Gartner predicts an increase of 5 percent.

Given these numbers, it’s not surprising that none of the areas surveyed is really doing better than 2021. Expenditure on devices, which after a strong previous year will hardly increase this year and are even expected to shrink in 2023, is falling particularly sharply. Business software and communication technology are more stable. Customers are also spending more money on data centers, albeit less than in 2021. Exact figures can be found at Gartner itself.

Why then the explicit joy because of the rather mixed view? The market researchers see IT services in particular in constant growth. This includes some of the cloud services, but also consulting services. And this is where Gartner suggests that by 2025, organizations will be relying on them significantly more. This is due to an increasingly urgent and accelerating change that is widening the gap between digital business ambitions and in-house capabilities.

CIOs should have focused on critical and short-term projects for the last two years. So if they wanted to implement their digital strategies, they would have to rely on consulting firms. In particular, the shortage of skilled workers and inflation in salaries would make this necessary.

Gartner wants to add at least one concrete example to this outlook: The cloud market is huge and will continue to grow. But to develop their cloud strategy, the majority of large organizations will turn to external consultants in the coming years. After all, from 2022 companies would focus more on outsourcing their internal software as SaaS – with flexibility and agility as the goal.
