Gaspard Ulliel at Marvel: what role does he play in Moon Knight?

The Moon Knight series marks the last appearance on the small screen of the late Gaspard Ulliel. What character did the French actor play in the Marvel series? Warning, spoilers.

Warning, spoilers. It is advisable to have seen episode 3 of Moon Knight before continuing to read this article.

Gaspard ulliel was announced in the casting of Moon Knight for several months and French Marvel fans were delighted to see him in the series. The terrible disappearance of the actor at the beginning of the year 2022 makes his appearance in the Marvel show even stronger, knowing that this is his last appearance on the small screen.

The French actor thus appears in the third episode of Moon Knight, available today on Disney+, halfway through the mini-series following the dangerous adventures of Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac), a man with dissociative identity disorder who shares the same body as mercenary Marc Spector, aka Moon Knight.

Weakened by this psychological problem, Steven/Marc tries to find the balance between his two identities and must fight formidable enemies, including Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), in a battle among the gods of Egypt. And this adventure leads him to meet the character of Gaspard Ulliel.

Gaspard Ulliel as Anton Mogart

Anton Mogart aka Midnight Man (L’Homme de Minuit, in French) is one of the main antagonists of Moon Knight in the comics. First appeared in comics Moon Knight Vol.1 #3, published in 1981, Midnight Man appears as an antiquity dealer with a troubled and unknown past. This wealthy man acted solely for the purpose of owning rare works and not for profit. A talented burglar and expert in the art of infiltration, Midnight Man is endowed with no powers and uses a pistol and an oriental dagger when he has to fight.

Midnight Man vs. Moon Knight

The Moon Knight miniseries took a different path for Anton Mogart’s incarnation. Indeed, Gaspard Ulliel plays an art collector, who knows well Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy), the ex-wife of Marc Spector, whom he met in Madripoor, a fictional place of lawlessness in the Marvel universe and paradise of Southeast Asia for criminals, which we have already seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The live action version of Anton Mogart by Gaspard Ulliel, who is seen for the first time training for El-Mermah, maintains that he wants to preserve the historical heritage and allows Steven/Marc and Layla to decipher Senfu’s sarcophagus to find clues against Arthur Harrow. But the latter arrives and sows discord in the group.

Steven/Marc then becomes Moon Knight and fights against the henchmen of Anton Mogart and those of Arthur Harrow, who manages to escape. In the battle, Anton Mogart takes a hit and looks badly damaged but not completely killed. Does this suggest a return of the character in another episode of the miniseries?

In the meantime, Marvel and Disney paid tribute to the late actor with a card at the end of episode 3, indicating “In memory of Gaspard Ulliel”several months after condolences by a press release, relayed in variety : “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.”
