Meta Group, formerly Facebook, has been fined €17 million for breaching GDPR in Ireland. This sanction follows an investigation into practices dating from 2018.
The Data Protection Commission (DPC), the Irish equivalent of the Cnil, imposed a fine of 17 million euros on Meta (ex-Facebook) for non-compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). After an investigation into 12 alleged violations of the GDPR between June and December 2018, the authority concluded that Meta’s platforms had violated Articles 5 and 24 of the European text. The authority thus found that “Meta Platforms did not have appropriate technical and organizational measures in place that would allow it to easily demonstrate the security measures it has implemented to protect EU user data”.
“This fine sanctions practices from 2018 that we have since updated, and not a failure to protect people’s information.reacted a spokesperson for the company. We take our obligations under the GDPR seriously”. It must be said that the company is not often worried by the DPC which centralizes complaints from the 27 players in the European Union on issues related to the processing of personal data by Gafam. It is even regularly accused of being complacent towards the tech giants, reinforced by the attractive tax framework of the country which led Facebook or Google to choose it for their European headquarters.
Last September, Facebook was fined 225 million euros by the same DPC for lack of information on the WhatsApp platform. A fine of 50 million euros was first imposed, before the rumble of several European authorities led to its upward revision.
