Notable technical differences have a logical impact on the performance of the next two GeForce RTX 4000s.
Just available and tested in our columns just yesterday, the GeForce RTX 4090 will soon be followed by the RTX 4080 16 GB and RTX 4080 12 GB. These two younger sisters are scheduled for November and have more differences than their name suggests. leave to think.
AD103 vs. AD104 GPUs
Remember that, for the moment, NVIDIA has presented three Ada Lovelace GPU variants for the GeForce RTX 4000. The AD102 is the beefiest, and in its AD102-300 version, it equips the RTX 4090.
Next to it, the AD103 and AD104 will logically be integrated into the RTX 4080 16 GB and RTX 4080 12 GB. The AD103 is however much better equipped than its little brother with, for example, 9,728 CUDA cores, when the AD104 has to be content of “only” 7,680 of these units.
The same goes for video memory. There is the onboard quantity (16 GB against 12 GB), but also what goes around. We are talking about 22.4 Gbps memory on a 256-bit bus for the RTX 4080 16 GB. The 12 GB must make do with 21 Gbps memory with a 192-bit interface.
24 to 30% difference between the two
Differences that can also be perceived through the TDP announced at 320 W for the 16 GB version, while the RTX 4080 12 GB is limited to a TDP of 285 W. We can perceive the consequences of all these lags on the performance published by NVIDIA.
The manufacturer released some graphics to illustrate the power of these two next RTX 4000s. Our colleagues wasted no time in compiling these results and pointing out that the difference in cores of 26% is found in games with differences of 24 30% in favor of the RTX 4080 16 GB.
In fact, the RTX 4080 12 GB will not be able to exceed the RTX 3090 Ti, but should be 10 to 20% more efficient than the RTX 3080. Remember that when it was released, the latter was at 719 euros, so that the RTX 4080 12 GB is already displayed at 1,099 euros.
